Nicoletta Salomon, PhD

Current Position: full-time Professor of Fine Arts and Creative Writing, at the Florence University of the Arts – The American University of Florence  (FUA–AUF), Italy, where I also serve as a member of the Academic Senate and a member of the Scientific Committee.

 I graduated in Classics both at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and at the University of Pisa.

I obtained my PhD in Greek History at the Scuola Normale of Pisa.

I obtained my Post-doctoral Fellowship in Classics at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa.

I won various fellowships to carry academic research in Italy (Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, University of Pisa, University of Venice, The Italian National Research Council); in Europe (Paris, École Normale Supérieure and École Pratique des Hautes Études; Geneva, Fondation Hardt; University of Tübingen); in the US (Princeton University, The Graduate School).

I won a 2-years Research&Teaching fellowship in Aesthetics at the University of Florence.


My academic research focuses on Aesthetics and Classics. My specific fields of interest are: creativity, memory, identity, creative processes in painting and writing.

My essay La zattera di mimesis: i greci, la creazione, l’arte, Marsilio, Venice 2001, won the Castiglioncello – Costa degli Etruschi Philosophy Award, and was awarded the Orient-Express special jury award, as well as the Valitutti special jury award (2002).

As a writer of fiction I focus on women’s struggle for identity.

My novel Questa non è una storia d’amore has been shortlisted at the Calvino Prize 2005.

My novel Tredici anni has been long-listed at the Calvino Prize 2019.

My novel Royal has been long-listed at the Clvino Prize 2023.

I am a professional translator from English, French, German, Latin, Ancient Greek.

I am fluent in English and French, and I have a good knowledge of German.

I teach and write in English and Italian.

I am an established painter, my work is represented by the Immaginaria Arti Visive Gallery, Florence (https://www.galleriaimmaginaria.com). My artworks have been exhibited in European art fairs, and are in various private collections in Europe and in the US. I am a full-time Professor of Creative Writing, Fine Arts, and Creative Processes for the Arts, Head of the Fine Arts Department, as well as a member of the Scientific Committee of the Florence University of the Arts – The American University of Florence, Italy (FUA–AUF).
